Oppo, I have a challenge for all y’all. It involves classic beater cars and a hypothetical endurance race. Behold:
Beverly Hills Car Club is the go-to “dealership” for classic cars sold as-is. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in all manner of conditions...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Here’s the challenge. You find yourself stranded at this “dealership” with only a toolbox and a suitcase containing $100k. You need to be in New York City in exactly one week. You have to find the best car to get you to NYC.
Now for a twist: A number of other bloggers are present too, each with a toolbox and $100k. Whoever gets to NYC first gets to keep the car that he or she purchased. All leftover money has to be returned, and all cars except first place are returned to the dealership as well. (They’ll be sold at a ridiculous markup since y’all got them running reliably .)
Challenge rules:
You buy ONE car !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to drive from Beverly Hills to NYC
You can spend the remaining funds on a parts car
You must get the car running and get it all the way across the country
The toolbox contains every tool you need for the chosen car, but you must factor in the labor-hours it will take to get it running
All the freeways have been closed off for this challenge, so you need to consider top speed in your choice of car
The only consumables available on the journey will be gasoline, coolant, and oil, so you must carry any replacement parts with you in the car
You must pay full price for the parts car if you so choose to buy one
Post your ideal car & parts car, and explain/justify your strategy. Bonus points for creativity and unlikely parts cars or engine swaps!
Racers, start your engines fix your engines!

I win. NEXT
EDIT: pay someone to drop in a Accord motor for another 15K. I’ll still win.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:02 |

That was easy. This should get me cross country without a hiccup.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:03 |
|
I did the same thing. notice it needs a motor rebuild
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:03 |
|
That was going to be my choice.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:05 |
|
Can you factor in the time it takes you to rebuild the motor? Sure it’ll run great once it’s running, but other Oppos might have a lead on you by then...
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:05 |
|
Probably not...
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:06 |
|
Hehehe but the rebuild is gonna cost you time. Question becomes, is this NSX fast enough to make up for that lost time?
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:06 |
|
Can’t be that hard to find a totaled NSX with a good engine. A couple days to swap it and then you have the rest of the week to blast across the country. With free access to the highways it would only take a day to get cross country.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:06 |
|
That’d be so rad to get to keep if you got there first...
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:07 |
|
Find a totaled NSX with a good motor and you could swap this in a couple days. Might even be able to get a manual out of the deal.

It is the perfect car to just buy and drive

The 1985 porsche turbo

See you in a week.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:12 |

Cruising at top speed is perfect in a GT car like that.
It’s an Aston Martin though so you are taking a big risk of actually making it the whole distance...
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:12 |
|
Newest car they’ve got and would probably win but would I really want to keep that?
This would be more like it and have good odds.
Finally, there’s this:

Ha
ya
bu
sa swap.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:13 |

Strong choice. Now I need to look up the BMW style number for those wheels. Looks epic.

Call Finnegan and Freiburger!

These were the shit when I was a teen, right up there with the Lotus Carilton
and Merc. 500E. Probably
a 160 mph car with a fresh engine and new z rated tires.

YES

Ford 302 V8 and some sort of Ford slushbox? Should be pretty reliable!
Buy a Foxbody, swap whatever, delete emissions bullshit, and drive!
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:23 |
|
second best one is this:
https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1990-ferrari-testarossa-c-8900.htm
grab it, stuff it in gear, run like hell.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:23 |
|
I mean, that is ha lf the fun. Plus How could I not buy the Aston?
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:24 |
|
I saw that too, tempting, but you need to be true to user name.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:25 |
|
Put a 2.5 rear end in for more top speed.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:25 |
|
I considered that one but would feel kinda bad only spending $19k out of the 100.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:28 |
|
I’d stop in vegas and blow it all on hookers, gambling and blow.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:31 |
|
Probably the DB7. For $27,500 what is there to lose? Even if it breaks down I'd have a good time until it did...
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:38 |
|
I feel pretty confident that this one could drive off their dealership lot and straight across the country:

![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:40 |
|
Yes, exactly.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 19:56 |
|
Yeah, I think you are right. It’s going to be SL55 AMG, the DB7, or one of the modern Porsches (probably the 4S). All can get going right away. None of them (no not even the Aston) are especially likely to break down on a 2800 mile trip. All of them have roughly the same top speed (the AMG can go faster, but not on road tires, and probably you’d end up wasting just as much time tanking up more frequently). Pick the one you want and run with it.

Style 21s , more commonl y referred to as throwing stars.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 20:05 |
|
Either I make it or don’t. Might as well max out that $100k.
Bonus that an air cooled turbo will probably be worth more after the trip.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 20:13 |

Roadrunner blue interior 4 on the floor with pistol gripe and a pile of maintenance records. Seems like a safe bet. Maybe 2000 bucks for some cooling system upgrades, speed rated tires, and and your done.
I’m
![]() 08/09/2018 at 20:30 |
|
That is a good choice. Certainly a stylish one. Probably a great highway car too
![]() 08/09/2018 at 20:31 |
|
That’s cheating
![]() 08/09/2018 at 20:54 |
|
I was going to pick the G-Wagen because service records but realized it would be too slow.
So this has a Fuel Injected Ford 5.0 should be reliable enough and fast enough.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 20:57 |
|
As much as I’d love to gamble on an old Porsche, there’s only one correct answer:
https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1979-pontiac-trans-am-c-7554.htm
Strong V8 engine, mostly reliable, plus parts are common enough to find means I should have time to stop by Texarkana, Texas to pick up some Coors Light on the way.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 21:17 |
|
I definitely prefer European sports cars and I considered a 911 but there no amount of pure speed is going to make up for lost time repairing something broken. As such I chose the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. It’s in good running condition and ready to go, plus it’s going to be very comfortable allowing for longer driving stints, and it’s still very fast (well sufficiently fast). Also in the unlikely event something this reliable does break down parts will be readily available from most parts stores, and will be easy (and simple) to work on. I think it’s the clear winner.

YOU KNOW THAT YOU JERKS DONE GONE AND BROUGHT THIS ALL ON YOURSELVES RIGHT???.........
first i will introduce you to what you are going to be racing against ..........
$6950..........
and here is what is powering it........
NEW POWER PARAGLIDER - $15500 (New Ulm)

Those wheels, though Plus who knows how they’d hold up to sustained high speeds
![]() 08/09/2018 at 23:06 |
|
Sure they’re ugly...it wouldn’t be a rich persons car if it didn’t have questionable aesthetic choices.
As for safe at high speed ...is everything sold in America of questionable quality? I don’t think so, (then again I’m in Oz where all automotive wheels sold must comply with an Australian Standard which tends to ensure quality but also high prices... so maybe the US allows any sort of cheap shit in to ensure the Land of the Free remains affordable? ) so for this purpose they’ll be enough.

This caught my attention too. I didn’t even get off the first page.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 23:43 |

Ahem. I’m going to need some private time.
11,900$. Bargain detected. I’d buy this tomorrow if I had 12 grand.
I think that aston on the front page would be the winner for your contest though.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 23:50 |

This one seems to have a *lot* of questionable choices upon second glance. No accounting for taste
![]() 08/10/2018 at 00:01 |

or, the other more expensive, faster moving choice......
1957 BMW Isetta 300 shown here in red with plaid interior is equipped with a manual transmission, solid wheels and sunroof. The Isetta is very well conditioned having spent many years in Southern California. It’s also mechanically sound. For $29,500
with a driveline swap from........ HELICOPTER Revolution Mini 500 - $23900 (MAGNOLIA,TX)
either set up would be exciting to race........

I love T estarosas. I’d never seen pictures of the underside before — so featureless! Are most mid engine cars like that? I guess it’s easy when you don’t have to run prop shaft, exhaust and so on from front to back.
![]() 08/10/2018 at 02:55 |
|
It’s wrong hand drive anyway...I’d have to sell it if I got to NY first, regardless of its questionable manliness

I will be waiting for you losers!!!!
